You hand back a test. A student looks at the grade, and their eyes start to well up with tears. They wait until the end of class to approach you. Disappointment etched on their face, they say,

“But I studied.”

Few things are more disheartening. They put in the “work,” but it didn’t pay off.

So where was the disconnect? It may not be whether they studied, but what they believed studying meant. Students can spend considerable time rereading notes, reviewing homework, or revisiting familiar vocabulary without engaging in the kind of practice that produces durable learning.

These activities can feel productive because the material becomes familiar. Psychologists sometimes call this the illusion of fluency: when information feels familiar or easy to process, we mistake that familiarity for genuine learning. Students recognize the material and assume they know it—until they must retrieve it without their notes.

Time spent studying matters, but how that time is used matters even more. That raises an important question:

How can we help students recognize what they truly know—and use that information while there is still time to improve?

In this post, I share a retrieval-practice lesson designed to help students identify gaps in their learning while they still have time to address them. A complete lesson plan and student materials are included so you can adapt the activity for your classroom.

Do Students Actually Know How to Study?

For years, I assumed someone had already taught students how to study. By the time they reach high school, they have spent a lot of time in classrooms. Surely, somewhere along the way, someone explained what studying actually looks like. Right?

The more I teach, the less convinced I am.

We teach content, assign homework, give assessments, and tell students to study—but learning how to learn is rarely an explicit part of the curriculum. We assume students will recognize the effective strategies they experience in our classrooms and apply them independently. That connection doesn’t always happen.

Completing homework is not the same as studying.

Homework can support learning, but finishing an assignment does not necessarily tell students whether they can retrieve that information later. Effective studying requires students to determine what they know, what they do not know yet, and where to focus next—a distinction that may be obvious to us but not to them.

Why We Did This a Week Before the Test

I intentionally scheduled this lesson a week before the test—not the day before. A review activity is most useful when students still have time to act on what it reveals. If students discover a learning gap the day before an assessment, their options are limited, and the result is often cramming. Identifying that same gap a week earlier gives them time to revisit the material, ask questions, practice retrieving it again, and strengthen their understanding across multiple study sessions.

As the infographic illustrates, distributed practice strengthens long-term retention more effectively than one cram session. Spacing also allows some forgetting to occur between practice sessions. Although that can make retrieval feel harder, the effort of recalling information reinforces learning and makes the knowledge more accessible later. I love telling my students that forgetting is part of the learning process!

If we want students to become better learners, we need to make effective study strategies explicit. Here are some general guidelines we can share with students.

  • Space it out. Study across several days instead of cramming the night before.
  • Do more than reread. Seeing an answer is not the same as producing it independently.
  • Use retrieval to find your gaps. Ask yourself: Can I explain this without looking? Can I define it, compare it with another concept, or apply it to a new situation? When retrieval is difficult or incomplete, use that information to decide what to practice next.

Of course, learning cannot stop with memorizing content. I want students to analyze, apply, connect, evaluate, and think deeply—but they need knowledge to think with. The goal is not simply to accumulate information. It is to build knowledge they can retrieve and use.

Research Methods Round Up

That brings me back to my psychology classroom. Our first unit focuses on research methods, and it is packed with concepts that are easy to confuse: descriptive research, correlational studies, experimental design, variables, sampling, ethics, and statistics.

One week before the test, I devoted a 45-minute class period to our Research Methods Round Up.

The goal was simple:

Find the gaps before the test, not after it.

I set up six retrieval activities involving digital practice, sorting, discussion, explanation, and application. To give students ownership over the process, they completed three stations, choosing between two activities at each one.

I’ll share the station activities, reflection materials, and Google Form at the end of this post if you would like to adapt the lesson for your own classroom.

Roundup Stations

  • Connections asks students to sort psychology terms into groups and identify what connects them, while Blooket provides cumulative retrieval practice with immediate feedback.
  • Alike / Different focuses on meaningful similarities and differences, while Which One Doesn’t Belong? asks students to identify the odd term and defend their reasoning.
  • Taboo requires students to explain terms without relying on the most obvious words, while the Experimental Design Challenge asks them to apply what they know to short research scenarios.

The activities looked different, but they all asked students to do the same thing: retrieve what they knew.

From Retrieval to Metacognition

I didn’t want the lesson to end when the stations ended. If students simply completed three activities, closed their Chromebooks, and moved on, they would miss the opportunity to learn from their performance. After the stations, students compared their confidence with their actual performance. They identified what they could retrieve accurately, what still confused them, and what they needed to practice next.

I connected that reflection to IMPACT, a framework from Psychology in Your Life that emphasizes improving, monitoring, practicing, attending, connecting, and thinking deeply. The stations touched on all six IMPACT strategies, but Monitoring was central to this lesson. Students used their performance as evidence, turning the activity from a traditional review day into a plan for what to practice next.

I am realizing more and more that simply telling students to “study” may not be enough. If we want them to become more effective learners, we need to teach the habits of effective studying as deliberately as we teach the content itself.

What feels obvious to those of us who have spent our lives in classrooms may not be obvious at all.
